Texas Holdem Hand Odds – How to Extract Maximum Value

Playing high stakes no-limit Texas hold’em poker can be a thrill. Many high stakes players put up as blinds what most of us sit down with in our low and middle stakes games as our entire stack. If you are brave, talented, and/or fortunate enough to sit at the poker table in one of these high stakes no-limit games, either at an online poker site or in a live casino, you’re going to have to bring all your no-limit hold’em skills to bear. One ability that is especially key in high stakes games is the ability to extract maximum value for your hand.

Although texas holdem hand odds is just as important in high-stakes games as in mid- or low-limit games, you have to focus more on playing your opponents’ hands rather than your own. If you are a skilled hand reader, you can use your opponents’ hands to your advantage. If you know exactly what someone holds, you can always bet the perfect amount – either to get paid off or force the ones you’re up against to lay down their hands.

Value Betting
One of the arts that is lost to many at lower stakes hold’em poker games is the art of the value bet. The value bet is a bet you make, usually on the river, when you wish to get called. You want it to be just enough so that a slightly inferior hand will call you, but not so much that if you get raised by a surprise bigger hand, it will be overly expensive to abandon the hand. This skill is even more important in high stakes no-limit hold’em games, as the amount you can extract with a value bet can often be a very significant amount, since the stacks are deeper and the pots are bigger. Knowing how much to value bet requires the experience gathered from many sessions of play, and the confidence in your read that your hand is just a little better than your opponents'. If this bet appears to be a defensive bet made out of weakness, you may get raised off the hand. If it is too large, an opponent may feel unable to call even if he believes you are bluffing. A good value bet really does have to be just right.

Pot Building
As soon as you have the texas holdem poker odds on your side and believe you have a great chance to win a poker hand, you should start thinking about building the pot. For this reason, throwing in a moderate bet with a strong hand such as a set is often a good idea. Slowplaying a flopped set is not really necessary, since no one will put you on a set when you bet out, and the more money you get into the pot early, the more you can really push it later, which in a high stakes game, can lead to enormous profits. Even if you flop a flush it’s often a good idea to bet. People will be suspicious if you bet out on a three suited board, and if they have nothing to call you down with, slowplaying will not extract additional money anyway. You may also wish to bet a flush draw, especially if you believe your opponents will not put in any more money once the third of a suit comes, but might throw away a decent hand such as a medium pair if you bet immediately.

Target Selection
You must be observing your opponents to be successful in high stakes no-limit poker, in a live casino and at online poker sites. Once you know your opponents, you should be trying to build flush and straight draw pots against calling stations who can’t get rid of a hand, not against tight players who will put their poker chips in when they have the best of it and get away immediately when they don’t. Use a texas holdem calculator to learn your chances of winning hands in different situations: Flush draw with an over card against top pair, over pair against two pair, set against straight draw etc. Once you know the odds by heart, you can focus on what’s really important: the players you are up against.
